C. 1890 Crow Parfleche Polychrome Painted Envelope
This is a circa 19th Century parfleche polychrome pigment painted envelope from the Crow Native American Indians of the Northern Plains. The piece shows a geometric polychrome mineral pigment painted traditional design done on Parfleche Rawhide created from a Buffalo Hide. The case shows wonderful construction and a traditional early classic design. Provenance: From a large collection of Native American Antiquities in Billings, Montana where it was found to be an authentic circa late 1800’s Crow example. The piece shows colors of red, blue, green, yellow all in mineral pigment paints such as ocher / ochre. The piece has a similar design and age to that of a few classic pieces listed at previous auctions such as the Cheyenne Parfleche listed at Heritages 6/14/2008 auction for $18,000 to $22,000, the Plains Parfleche case sold for $3,250 at Allard’s 8/13/2011 auction, and the Crow Parfleche Envelope that sold for $2,500 at Brian Lebel’s Old West Show & Auction 6/25/2011. The piece appears to be in good original condition with some wear to the bottom right corner and excellent displayed polychrome mineral paint. Measures when closed (as shown in the lead) 28”L by 12”W by 3.5” thick.
