Featured in this lot is this large black on black plate by San Ildefonso Pueblo potter's Maria & Julian. Maria was born in May 1887 to Tomas Montoya and Reyes Pena at the San Ildefonso Pueblo. In the summer of 1919 Maria took her black on black pottery to the Santa Fe fair. This is the earliest documentation that we can find that describes this new pottery style. Maria had a very long life and a long career that shaped not only the San Ildefonso Pueblo economy but many pueblos and Indians in New Mexico. Unfortunately Julian Montoya passed away in March 1943 of exposure. Maria passed away on July 20, 1980. The plate features an iconic black on black construction that show a spinning sun burst or floral central decoration with a circular rim that spirals into a larger band before the central decoration. The plate is marked 'Maria & Julian' on the bottom of the plate. The condition of this large black on black plate is good with no obvious signs of damage and shows good overall condition. The measurements of this large black on black plate is 15 1/8" x 15 1/8" x 1 1/2". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
