For your consideration is this collection of three Zuni fetishes (two bears and a wolf) crafted from jet or black marble. The largest, 3 1/2" t x 1 7/8" w, is a bear crafted from jet. The bear is nicely detailed and depicted standing on its hind legs. It has inlaid Turquoise eyes and a sunface on its chest. The sunface is Mother of Pearl, Red Coral, and Black Jet. It is signed on the bottom, "FP Qiuam" (Farlan Panteah Quam) . The second bear is crafted from black marble and is more stylised. The bear has inlaid Turquoise eyes and an inlaid heartline symbol on its chest. The bear is signed, "CAP" on the bottom. In Zuni culture, the bear is the Guardian and Master of the West; bear fetishes represent healing and protection. The third fetish is a wolf, crafted from jet. The wolf has inlaid Turquoise for eyes; running down the center of the back are two small Mother of Pearl inlays that flash green; In the center of the back of the tail are two more small Turquoise inlays. One side of the bushy tail is inlaid with Mother of Pearl, and Pipestone, the other side of the tail is inlaid with Mother of Pear, Pipestone, and Jet. The piece is signed, "BP" (Brandon Phillips). In Zuni culture, the wolf is the guardian spirit and master of the East. Wolves represent successful hunting and working together for the common good. All three fetishes are in very good condition.
