Z Prefix Remington Model 1903A4 Sniper Rifle with Lyman Alaskan Telescopic Sight

Manufactured by the Remington Arms Co. in 1943. The rifle has a blue Lyman Alaskan telescopic sight with the military serial number "A3758" roll-stamped on the tube, cross-hair reticle and military rubber eyepiece. The left side of the scope tube is neatly electro-penciled "For Rifle No. Z4001790". The telescopic sight has a standard parkerized Redfield mount. The rifle has the distinctive Model 1903A4 features which include Type "C" scant grip stock with bolt relief cut-out, modified bolt handle, rear sight removed to accommodate the scope mount and barrel with no front sight base or blade. The rifle has been Ordnance over hauled and the receiver, bolt, scope mount and rings, buttplate, small bow trigger guard, lower, middle and upper barrel bands, sling swivels and stacking swivel have a uniform gray-green parkerized finish. The receiver markings "U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3" are rolled to the left side to allow them to be viewed with the scope mount in place. The serial number, "Z4001790" is located on the right side of the receiver below the scope mount. The barrel is roll-stamped "RA" above the Ordnance 'Shell and Flame' insignia and the date "9-43". Most of the rifle components are stamped with the Remington "R". The left side of the stock below the receiver is stamped with the Raritan Arsenal overhaul mark "RA-P". A circled block "P" proofmark is stamped in the inside of the pistol grip. Although the Ordnance Department planned to utilize the Lyman Alaskan telescopic sight on the Model 1903A4 rifles. Nearly all of the actual production rifles were fitted with Weaver M73 telescopic sights. Model 1903A4 rifles sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) had the telescopic sights removed before sale. Most telescopic sights found on Model 1903A4 rifles were fitted after the rifles were purchased from the DCM.

Very fine as arsenal refinished. The rifle retains more than 98% of the arsenal parkerized finish. The scope is excellent; the tube has 90% of the original commercial blue finish and the optics are clear. All of the markings on the rifle barrel, receiver and scope mount are sharp. The stock has been reoiled but remains excellent with a clear over haul inspection mark. This is an excellent example of a desirable Z-prefix Model 1903A4 Remington Sniper Rifle.
