This is an exceptional example of a WWII US contract Colt "Service Model" Ace pistol that was manufactured in 1942 and chambered in 22LR. These were originally produced as a low-cost method to train troops that duplicated the weight, feel and function of the original Model 1911A1 pistol. This model used the new "Floating Chamber" designed by "Carbine Williams" that readily made the pistol fire exactly like the Model 1911A1. It has the two line Colt address and patent numbers on the left side of the slide followed by the Rampant Colt and the right side marked, "COLT/SERVICE MODEL//.22LONG/RIFLE". The right of the frame has the "G.H.D." inspected stamp for Col Guy Drewey with the Colt "X" and "VP" triangle proof on the upper left front of the trigger guard bow, with "60" on the opposite. The right side of the frame is marked "UNTIED STATES PROPERTY" over the serial number "SM3593". It has the desirable adjustable rear sight with target height front sight, two tone Colt Ace marked magazine and is fitted with checkered walnut grips.
BBL: 5 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 22 LR
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: SM3593
Condition: Near mint as professionally restored. The pistol retains 97% blue finish with some mild thinning and some very mild edge wear on the muzzle end of the slide. The markings are crisp due to restoration. The grips are also near mint. The markings remain sharp. The pistol appears to have been fired very little and the mechanics are excellent. An extremely nice Colt Service Model Ace pistol.
