Winchester model 1876 short rifle, .45-75 caliber, 22” factory octagon barrel, which is factory matted and factory engraved “Thomas Barnsley, Grahamstown” with plain trigger, 7-leaf rear sight, engraved frame, plain straight grain stock, rifle butt, received in warehouse March 1883, shipped March 1883 to order number 1414. The gun shows an even grey to brown patina finish with some traces of blue mixed in. Some slight erosion and pinprick pitting just starting, and some faint blue within the patina on the barrel. The magazine tube shows a couple of dents. The frame shows good crisp factory engraving with scrolls and stag on left, scrolls and floral on right. The factory original 7-leaf rear sight shows platinum lines. The loading gate shows considerable original blue. The wood is good with some even wear, normal aging, and at least very good overall. The action is good, the bore is good to very good. A very rare combination of special order features and the only factory engraved 22” short rifle known to this cataloger.
