Winchester Model 1876 “open top” special ordered deluxe rifle in .45-75 caliber, 28” heavy octagon barrel, full magazine, set trigger, checkered deluxe pistol gripped stock, blue and case hardened finish, factory inscribed on the left side plate Geo E. Brown, serial number 742. Received in the warehouse March 2, 1878 shipped from the warehouse March 9, 1878 with 4 other arms to ordered number 11257 note this serial number is near a 1 of 1000 and may have been shipped to the same order number. The barrel shows 40% to 60% original blue that is toning and drifting to a brown patina with some losses at the edges and normal aging with some minor pitting mostly on the magazine tube. The barrel address is good and clear and the edges are sharp. The frame shows strong traces of case hardening within a silvery patina with some light cleaning on the side plates and some minor erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. The stocks are very good plus with considerable original varnish and small losses at the edges and are at least very good condition with excellent wood to metal fit. The rifle is mounted with an original to the period long range veneer tang sight of the right style and vintage. The front and rear sights are the correct type and in their proper positions. The loading gate and small parts show considerable original finish and the rifle has a very nice look overall. The action is good and the bore is very good with some normal use but still bright. Deluxe open top rifles with low serial numbers are very rare and almost never encountered with factory ordered extra heavy barrels and inscriptions. Keith and Lori Candee collection. Est.: $14,000-$28,000.
