Winchester Model 1876 , one of one thousand, lever action rifle, .45-60 cal., 28" octagon barrel, full magazine, set trigger, deluxe checkered and pistol gripped burl wood stock, rifled butt, serial #10096. This one of one thousand remains in excellent original condition and is considered the best known example of a Model 1876. The rifle is pictured in "Winchester The Golden Age of American Gunmaking and the Winchester 1 of1000" by R. L. Wilson in the color spread adjacent to the title page, on top of page 111 and also page 122. Also, "The Story of the Winchester 1 of 1000 and 1 of 100 Rifles" by Dr. Edmund E. Lewis, mentions this serial number was the last 1 of 1000 to leave the factory on September 11, 1880, ending Winchester's legendary series. Dr. Lewis records that only 55 Model 1876 1 of 1000s were produced and old time collectorsagree about 25 original examples currently are known, making them among the rarest of all collector's firearms. The rifle retains 95-98% original bright blue on the barrel with just some beginning age and about 80-90%
