Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Rifle with Cody Letter
Manufactured in late 1879, this rifle is a Second Model with the dust cover rail secured to the top of the receiver with two screws. The top barrel flat is marked " WINCHESTER'S - REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN, CT. / KING'S IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860" ahead of the rear sight and "CAL. 45 -- 60" at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the early "MODEL 1876." without the foliate at each end and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. German silver blade front sight and adjustable folding rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards and marked "1876" at the top. Mounted with smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron forend cap and crescent buttplate with compartment containing an original 4 piece cleaning rod. The accompanying Cody letter verifies the serial number, rifle configuration, caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, that the rifle was received at the warehouse on November 3, 1879 and shipped from the warehouse with 2 other arms on March 13, 1880.

Condition: Very good. The crisp metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina with some strong traces of the original blue finish in the protected areas around the side plates and on the loading gate. The lightly sanded wood has been refinished and remains very good with a couple of minor gouges on the upper left rear of the forearm and overall a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
