Winchester Model 1873 rifle, .38-40 cal., 22" octagon barrel, full magazine, shotgun butt, shipped September 28, 1880 with 19 guns to order #21643. The stock is period inlaid with a silver plaque that is inscribed"Presented to Dr. D. F. Powell "White Beaver" from W. H. Cody "Buffalo Bill" Sep 8-1881". Dr. D. F. Powell was known as the Fighting Surgeon, was a frontier scout, trick shot and close friend of Buffalo Bill Cody, whoappeared in the Wild West Shows as a performer accomplishing remarkable rifle shooting. He was known as "White Beaver" and he performed all manners of trick and fancy shooting during exhibitions. He was electedMayor several times by the citizens of La Crosse, Wisconsin and he was renowned as a physician and surgeon. Also he marketed "White Beaver's Cough Cream" in which Cody was a partner. A Buffalo Bill magazine #59recants the thrilling story of Frank Powell, the Fighting Surgeon, which was distributed at the Wild West Shows. Frank Powell was a flamboyant figure whose grandfather was born in Kentucky in 1847 to a Scottish father and
