Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Tang Sight
Winchester Model 1873 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1879. The rifle has the screw attached dust cover guide and late style dust cover with seriated edges. The rifle is blued with casehardened hammer, loading lever and crescent steel buttplate. The stock and forearm are black walnut with a varnish finish. The rifle has an octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The barrel has a Marble's No. 2 front sight with ivory tip and a folding express style rear sight. The front and rear sights are not original to the rifle. A folding graduated peep sight is mounted on the upper receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860." ahead of the rear sight. "44" is crudely hand stamped on the cartridge elevator. The serial number, "61198" is located on the lower receiver tang.

Condition: Very good plus. The rifle retains 20% of the original blue finish with the balance having aged to a plum-brown patina. The edges of the barrel, receiver and side plates have light finish wear. The barrel markings are crisp. The stock and forearm are in very good condition with moderate handling wear. The bore is bright and in very good condition. This is a very good example of a Second Model 1873 Sporting Rifle.
