For auction in this lot is a production year 1886, Winchester Model 1873, Lever-Action, full octagon rifle, chambered for .38-40 caliber. The Model 1873 was one of the most successful Winchester rifles of its day, with Winchester marketing it as "The Gun that Won the West". Still an icon in the modern day, it was manufactured between 1873 and 1923. It was originally chambered for the .44-40 cartridge, which was the first centrefire cartridge and became immensely popular. The 1873 was later produced in .38-40 and .32-20, all of which later became popular handgun cartridges of the day, allowing users to carry just one type of ammunition. This particular example is chambered in the .38-40 cartridge, and features a full octagon 21" barrel, with a height adjustable rear buckhorn sight, paired with a blade front sight. The rifle is marked with correct roll-stamping, reading; "Model 1873" on the upper-tang, Serial Number "199345B" on the lower tang, "38 Cal" on the brass lifter, ".38 CAL" on the top of the barrel, behind the rear sight, and “WINCHESTER’S –REPEATING - ARMS-NEW HAVEN, CT” over “KING’S – IMPROVEMEMT – PATENTED – MARCH 29, 1866. OCTOBER 16, 1860.” on the top of the barrel. Overall, the rifle shows good aesthetic, and mechanical condition. The blue finish shows an even plum purple patina, and the walnut fixtures show good condition, with slight handling marks. The action is tight, and the bore is fair, with strong rifling, and some pitting. The rifle is missing its original dust cover. The rifle qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 199345B.
