Winchester Model 1873 2nd model, lever action rifle with late thumbprint dust cover and screw down rail, .44-40 caliber, 24” octagon barrel, full magazine, rifle butt and long-range venier type tang sight with settrigger, serial number 35078. Factory letter addressed to James D. Gordon author of Winchester 1873 book confirms rifle, octagon barrel, set trigger, varnished stock, received in the warehouse June 16, 1879shipped from the warehouse June 16, 1879 with 2 other arms to order number 15760. This rifle was formally in the James D. Gordon collection and sold at his auction in the mid-1990s to a major 1873 collector and nowre-consigned. The rifle shows 30% to 50% original blue evenly drifting and toning with some minor erosion and pinprick pitting just starting. There is some bright blue in protected areas and the edges are fairlysharp with good barrel address. The wood shows a slightly better than average grain and approximately 10% to 20% original varnish. The wood to metal fit is near excellent. The patina on dust cover matches
