Winchester Model 1873 1st model early variation with raised thumb print dust cover in .44-40 caliber showing 24” round barrel, full magazine, rifle butt, serial number 2212 received in the warehouse September 19, 1874 shipped from the warehouse September 24, 1874 with 2 other arms to order number 232 with factory letter verifying features addressed to James Gordon author of the Winchester 1873 book and formally in hiscollection and also mentioned in this reference. The rifle remains in fair to good original condition showing a lightly cleaned gray patina finish with scattered moderate light erosion and some areas of pitting. Thestocks have also been lightly cleaned. The barrel address is good and clear. The thumb print dust cover is original and there is some major pitting in the area of the tang and on the butt. The action is good and thebore is fair to good. These very early raised thumb print dust cover 73’s are the beginning of the 73 series and have always been sought after by advanced Winchester collectors. Est.: $3,500-$7,000.
