This is an example of a Fourth Model Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine that was manufactured in 1881. The carbine has the brass buttplate found on earlier production Fourth Model 1866 rifles and carbines. The 20-inch round barrel has two barrel bands with a block iron front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the receiver has a staple-mounted saddle ring. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT. / KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866.OCTOBER 16. 1860", between the barrel band and the rear sight. There are no visible caliber markings. The serial number is located on the lower receiver tang behind the loading lever latch. Blue barrel and magazine tube, casehardened hammer and lever and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with brass carbine buttplate with compartment, (cleaning rod not included). The buttplate tang is stamped "F.H.I.T. (reportedly Flat Head Indian Territory) / MONT. / TERR." behind the top screw and "43" ahead of the screw (most likely spurious). There is also a crude period carved "G" on the heel.
BBL: 20 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 155261
Condition: Refinished showing artificial brown barrel and magazine tube. The receiver and buttplate both have an artificially aged patina. The lever has had a weld repair and flamed to give it a casehardened appearance. The repair caused it to be shortened a bit thus not allowing the lever latch to secure it, however it stays securely in the locked position. The buttstock has been cleaned and oiled, and remains good with only a few minor dings and handling marks. The forearm is an oversized modern replacement. The markings are clear. The action is very good.
