Winchester Model 1866 Infantry Rifle (Musket) with Socket Bayonet
Winchester Third Model 1866 Musket manufactured in 1869. The musket has a 27-inch round barrel with a round sight block that serves as a block for the socket bayonet. The magazine is 24 1/2-inches long. The musket has a 17-inch walnut forearm secured by two barrel bands and a walnut stock with carbine style brass buttplate with sliding trap door. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel, cleaning rod. Sling swivels are mounted on the stock and middle barrel band. The brass frame is flared at the junction with the forearm. The barrel has a block-mounted front sight with brass blade and a Henry style, folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-WINCHESTER'S -REPEATING-ARMS.-NEWHAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866.OCTOBER 16.1860" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number: "50221" and a "B" inspection mark are stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. The socket bayonet has a bright finish with 15-inch angular blade.
BBL: 27 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 50221
Condition: Very good plus. The blue finish on the barrel, magazine and barrel bands has aged to a deep brown patina. The metal surfaces are generally smooth with traces of surface rust. The case colors on the hammer and loading lever have a mottled, silver-gray, patina. The brass receiver and buttplate have a very attractive mustard yellow patina. The sideplate joints are tight and the receiver has minimal handling wear. The stock and forearm are in fine overall condition with scattered light handling marks. The barrel markings and serial number are clear. There is a replacement screw in the lever retaining spring. The bayonet has been cleaned and is in good overall condition with some scattered pitting. This is a very good example of a scarce Winchester Model 1866 Infantry Rifle with the original bayonet.
