Whitney contract for Massachusetts “Sea Fencible” musket showing MS stamp at breech and unusual style brass butt plate in .69 caliber smoothbore with 42” barrel. The lock shows crossed arrows and E. Whitney along with U.S. at center portion andNew Haven 1834 at rear and the tang is dated 1833. There is a “P” proof on the left of the breech. The conversion is a nipple screwed directly into the barrel with brass plug in flintlock lock plate. There is a rack number 94 stamped on thebutt plate. The metal surfaces show a gray to brown patina with scattered light to moderate pitting and erosion. The metal surfaces are generally good. The markings are good. The stock is good and would have been rated at very goodother then lost around the butt plate and a crack near the top of the butt plate. The original to the period ramrod is included and the lock works well. Refer page 17 “U.S. Military Small Arms 1816 to 1865” by Reilly and research indicatesconverted at Watertown U.S. Arsenal for use by Massachusetts State Marine Militia for guarding harbors and waterfronts.
