White Christmas Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen) Original Alternate Dance Costume
Come Christmas, there are a handful of Classic Holiday Movies that we will always gather around and watch. They include "It's A Wonderful Life", "Miracle On 34th Street", "A Christmas Story", and of course "White Christmas". And the two images we all remember from "White Christmas" (1954), besides the haunting theme song, is the final "Santa Claus" number, and of course Vera-Ellen, as Judy Haynes, in her all red dress, feathered hat, gloves and hand-muff, flying down from the heavens to blast "sexy" all over Danny Kaye and his dark and sober modern dancers in the famous "Chorography" number. We remember the dress, and that red muff she holds! In fact this outfit, from legendary costume designer Edith Head, is one of the most famous in all musical film history. Several variations of the outfit were created for Vera-Ellen. The all red was finally chosen, but another costume which Vera-Ellen danced in during rehearsals and test footage was also created. It is almost identical to the orignal, except that Edith Head decided to add "gold" accents to the long gloves, sash, blouse and hat. This is that original alternative costume that Vera-Ellen wore. It comes complete with all the elements: the red coat (with gold sash), a gold blouse and short-pants "dickies", gold long-sleeve gloves, the red feathered hat with gold base, the red pants with gold-trimmed frills, and that ever present red muff. The muff itself may have also been used in the actual production and includes the official "Paramount Studios" label inside the lining. There are also official Paramount labels on the pieces with the Studio name and "Vera-Ellen" written on them, and production-costume numbers as well as original tags. This wonderful classic costume also comes with a Letter of Provenience and the original tag from the Camden House Auctioneers in Beverly Hills where it was acquired over twenty-five years ago.
