This is a very fine example of a standard WWII production British Enfield No 4 MK 1 (T) sniper rifle that is complete with the scope, mount, scope can and wooden storage/transit case. These rifles were the standard British sniper rifle developed in the late 1930s and used until the early 1960s. They were selected for accuracy during production for conversion to the sniper configuration, by Holland & Holland, who actually performed the conversion work. The left side of the receiver ring is marked with a "crown/BNP" proof mark. The left side of the wrist is marked "M47C/1943/AT0265/TR". The rifle is fitted with a late pattern No. 32 Mk 3 scope that is marked on top of the tube "TEL. SIGHTING/. No. 32 Mk.3/O.S. 2039A/No 25540". The mount is stamped on the upper left side with the original rifle number "AT8707" which was lined out and restamped with "AT13075". The lower front section of the mount is stamped with "N92" and the rings are numbered "L237" and "L238" on the front and rear rings, respectively. The rifle has the standard blade front sight and tangent military rear sight. It is fitted with the correct wartime smooth semi-pistol grip stock with correct wartime pot-metal buttplate with butt trap compartment and the correct screw on wooden cheekpiece. It has the correct full-length forestock, and top handguards. It is correctly proof marked behind the trigger guard and the underside of the forend is numbered to match the rifle serial number. The buttstock is correctly stamped "S51" directly behind the pistol grip area, indicating the conversion was performed by Holland and Holland. This sniper rifle rig is complete with one original magazine, and an original No 8 green metal scope can and the original No 15 Mk I green wooden storage/transit case. The metal scope can has had a paper label scotch tapped inside the lid, which lists this rifle serial number (AT0265) and telescope serial number (25540).
BBL: 25 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 303 British
Finish: blue/black
Grips:
Serial Number: AT0265
Condition: Very fine overall with 95% of the original blue/black wartime finish with wear on the edges and high spots overall. The forestock, handguards and buttstock are all in very fine condition showing a hand rubbed linseed type finish (not sanded, just rubbed) with visible stock proofs and numbers. The rifle has the original matching bolt. The scope and mount have 95% of a black repainted finish which shows minor flaking around the edges and high spots overall. The scope itself has clear optics with no visible dirt or specs, however the windage and elevation knobs are stuck. The metal scope can retains 85% of its original green painted exterior finish showing even honest wear on the outside. The original label inside the lid is complete and intact, with the other label added as noted above. The No. 15 wooden transit case also retains 90% of its original green wartime finish with even wear on the outside edges and corners and the bottom. There is a long crack or separation on the back panel or back side of the box and the markings are complete and intact. A nice example of a desirable early No 4 Mk I (T) British sniper rifle.
