At first glance this appears to be a standard WWI Imperial German Luger pistol manufactured by the Imperial Arsenal at Erfurt in 1918. Upon a close inspection it appears that sometime after WWI this luger had the barrel replaced with a fresh barrel (still in 9mm) which was then the complete pistol was reproofed for commercial sales in German with just the standard Crown over "N" commercial proofmarks. The Crown N proof can be found on the top of the breechblock, the underside of the barrel, the left side of the barrel extension and frame rail. In addition to those proofs, the right side of the barrel extension was also proofed with an early single eagle proof mark over the old WWI Imperial inspection and acceptance proofs. The rest of the luger retains all the original military markings and serial number placements. This pistol has a standard rust blued finish with the straw colors on the various small parts. The chamber area is dated 1917 and standard Crown/ERFURT marks on top of the front toggle. As noted the right side of the barrel extension has the standard Crown over script proofs next to an Imperial Eagle firing proof. The overall pistol exhibits the typical Erfurt Arsenal machining and rust blued finish with most of the smaller parts having the standard Erfurt "Crown over script" letter proof. Extractor and safety are properly marked "GESICHERT" and "GELADEN". It is fitted with a set of checkered walnut grips and is complete with a WWI era nickel plated magazine with an unmarked wooden base marked.
BBL: 4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue/straw color
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 4170f
Condition: Very fine with 75% of the arsenal applied rust blued finish remaining with wear on the edges and high spots overall with some thinning on both grip straps. The various small parts retain 40% of their straw colors overall. The grips are in fine condition overall with nice checkering on both sides, with some minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the right side with just even honest wear across the tops of the checkering on both sides, but there are no cracks, or damage. The pistol has all matching numbers to include the replaced barrel as noted above, the grips which are unnumbered and the magazine which also has a blank base also as noted above. A very nice Luger that is an early post WWI commercial sales luger.
