Featured in this lot is this 1950-1960s Sanicula apothecary jar. Apothecary jars were used to store and preserve crude and compounded drugs, in both dry and liquid forms. This particular ceramic jar was used to store Sanicula, a plant used for treating chronic pain in the abdomen area. Sanicula is a genus of plants in family Apiaceae, the same family to which the carrot and parsnip belong. This genus has about 45 species worldwide, with at least 22 in North America. The common names usually include the terms sanicle or black snakeroot. This beautiful antique apothecary jar is cream colored ceramic with metallic gold stripe accents. It features the word, "Sanicula" is painted front and center showing what the jar had contained, with a background of the Sanicula plant and a yellow, curly border. The jar is in good condition for its age with no signs of chips, cracks or peeling paint. The jar measures 5" in diameter and 11 1/2" tall.
