Victorian Style Glass Beaded Purse
Offered in this lot is a Victorian style glass beaded purse with braided cord handles, mottle coloured plastic frame with a kiss clasp lock. Both sides of the purse have a Bavarian mountain town scene with a center clock tower and houses on a bluff overlooking a meandering river, a mountain range in the background, evergreen trees rising up the slopes, similar to pastoral scenes depicted on many such purses during the Victorian era. Purses in the 1950s varied greatly in size and material; many purses were fabricated from new plastics, such as celluloid and Bakelite, and women of the time knew that a purse would complete their look. In this time period, women had purses for nearly every occasion. Purses rose in popularity due to the recovering economy and celebrity influence. Similar to the 1930s beaded handbags were popular evening bags.
The purse interior has a stitched orange flower petal and green leaf motif. Beads incorporated include translucent and semi-translucent beadwork. Some stitching connecting bag to frame is missing and or frayed most likely due to use and age, no missing beads are readily noted, scratched noted on frame consistent with use and age, braided cord handle has loose braids also consistent with use and age, no other marring noted. Measures 6.25"W x 10.25"L
