Very rare and desirable U.S. Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless test revolver, .38 cal., 6” barrel, blue finish, checkered hard rubber grips, #41404 in overall good condition showing an even grey patina with scattered pinprick pitting and heavier pitting at the firing areas; good action and markings; fair bore; worn grips with scattered old mars but complete and fitting this gun. Only 100 of these .38 Safety Hammerless’ were sold to the U.S. Government in May, 1890, making this one ofthe most difficult of all U.S. contract arms to obtain for any Martial collector. Specimens are found in the serial # range of 41333-41470. Accompanied by a factory letter indicating #41404 was shipped from the factory on April 31, 1890 and delivered to the U.S. Government, National Armory, Springfield, MA and confirming the gun’s above-noted configuration. The letter also notes “This group of revolvers were specially built for the United States Government for testing”.
