Very rare J.B. Gilmore, Shreveport, LA percussion half stocked rifle, .475 caliber, 30.5” heavy octagon barrel that is marked J.B. Gilmore, Shreveport, LA as is the back action lockplate. Wood stock is single keyed; double set triggersworking at time of description, brass trigger guard and butt plate; accompanied by an iron bullet mold that was wired to the trigger guard at time of gun’s location by our consignor. The gun is in overall very good condition with a pleasing brown patina to metal surfaces; wood stock is also very good overall. Accompanying this lot is a copy of a Confederate Veteran magazine article dated Sept./Oct. 2009 by Jon B. Whittington on Jerome Bonaparte3 Gilmore, Gunsmith, Fireman,Businessman, Politician and Soldier. Also with this lot is a copy of a J.B. Gilmore period advertisement of his Gun Manufacturing business, a copy of pages from an 1890 “Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Louisiana, and acopy of the Confederate service records of Jerome B. Gilmore of Co. F, 3rd Louisiana Infantry. To summarize the Whittington article, Jerome B. Gilmore was born in Jefferson County, Kentucky in 1827. His father was a gunsmith and J.B. learned
