Very Fine U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet

This is a nice example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1889. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks, with an "A" on top. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, slotted button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP/1889" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" and "AL" on the underside behind the trigger guard. Complete with a "US" marked socket bayonet, with metal scabbard, leather frog and brass "US" hanger.

Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 85% original blue finish with areas thinned to smooth brown patina and 97% on the trigger guard and lower tang. The breechblock retains 90% original case colors. The stock is very good with a 1/2 inch x 3/8 inch and 1 1/4 inch x 1/2 inch pieced in repair on the right rear of the buttstock, otherwise a few scattered minor dings and dents. The cartouche and inspection marked are sharp. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is excellent with 95% original blue finish, the scabbard shows 90% and the frog shows some moderate wear.
