Manufactured in 1827, this is a very fine, totally original example of a Type II Springfield Model 1816 Flintlock Musket with the national armory brown finish. The left rear of the barrel has "P eagle head V" markings with the number "25" and "R / b" stamped on top at the breech. The lock plate has the "Eagle/Shield" motif over "US" stamped in front of the hammer and "SPRING / FIELD / 1827" stamped vertically behind the hammer. The barrel tang is also dated "1827". The letter "S" is stamped on the side plate and "PT" is stamped on the trigger guard plate. Sling swivels are present on the middle barrel band and trigger guard bow. The correct military full length stock has a buttplate marked "US / 40" on the tang, a clear cartouche on the left stock flat, "40 / SG" stamped on the left side of the buttstock, and the area behind the trigger guard plate is stamped with a clear cartouche and the letters "AD" .
