Very Fine U.S. Civil War Springfield Type I Model 1863 Rifle Musket with Bayonet
Only produced for one year, the 1863 Rifle Musket shares features with the 1861 Rifle Musket and Special Rifle Musket. Blade front and late pattern two-leaf folding rear sight, with the barrel marked "V/ P/ eagle head" on the left side of the chamber, "1863" on top and the American eagle on the bolster. The lock plate is marked "1863" behind the beveled hammer, with the Eagle and Shield motif next to "U.S./ SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. Smooth straight grip stock, with a tulip head straight shank steel ramrod, 3 barrel bands, a J.E. Condict (New York) brown leather sling, "ELA" cartouche on the left flat, a brass "100" tag, possibly from a museum, on the right side of the butt and a smooth metal buttplate. With an 18 inch "US/ J" marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Very fine, possibly unissued, showing an arsenal bright finish overall with a small amount of spotting and discoloration and a few areas of smooth gray patina. The stock is also very fine with a minor crack in the left flat extending from the upper screw, mild dents and scattered dings. The bayonet is very fine with a dull gray patina, a few small areas of minor pitting and some discoloration. The sling is very good. Mechanically excellent.
