This is an example of a Colt Model 1862 Police revolver that was manufactured in 1863. The revolver has the Colt high polish blue finish on the barrel and fluted, five-shot cylinder with case-hardened loading lever, frame and hammer. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated and the one-piece walnut grip has a high polish 'piano' finish. British "Crown G/P" and "Crown V" proof marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug and in each cylinder flute. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT" in two lines. "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. "PAT. SEPT. 10th 1850" is stamped in one cylinder flute. The full serial number, "20386" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. An "E" is stamped above and below the serial number in each of these locations. The partial serial number "0386" is stamped on the wedge, the cylinder pin and the rear face of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The revolver is complete with a rare late English oak case with full set of accessories. The case has a screw-reinforced top inlaid with a round brass plate. The interior is lined with green baize and has six compartments. A "PALL MALL, LONDON "DIRECTION FOR USING COLT'S PISTOLS" instruction sheet is glued to the inside of the lid. The case contains: (1) steel cleaning rod with blue steel handle, (2) large, 500 count, large tin of Eley Bros percussion caps with green label, (3) blued, iron, straight leg bullet mold marked "COLT'S/PATENT" on the spruce cutter and "36 P" on the right block, (4) "L-shaped" screw drive/nipple wrench, (5) "JAMES DIXON/&SONS/SHEFFIELD" bag-shaped powder flask with gold-plated top and charger, niter blue spring and brown lacquer body, (6) pewter oil bottle and (7) assorted 36 caliber round balls and conical bullets.

Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/case-hardened

Condition: Very fine. The revolver is all original, shows mostly storage wear and retains at 75% plus of the original blue and case-hardened finish. The blue finish on the barrel and cylinder shows mostly case wear; the exposed metal has a very attractive, plum patina. The barrel markings, serial numbers and British proofs are crisp. All of the cylinder safety pins are intact and the rear face of the cylinder and percussion nipples show minimal firing wear. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain most of the original color case-hardened finish with fiery case colors. The trigger guard and back strap have about 50% of the silver-plated finish. The grip is in excellent condition with most of the high polish varnish intact and minimal handling wear. The case exterior is in fine overall condition with scattered, minor, storage marks. The interior is in excellent condition. The lining is clean retains the dark green color and has minimal compression and storage marks. The Colt label has yellowed but remains in excellent condition. All of the accessories are in excellent condition and the flask is in near mint condition. This is a very fine example of a British cased and proofed Colt Model 1862 Police Revolver with excellent Dixon powder flask and accessories.
