This is a very nice example of a U.S. Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle that was manufactured in 1889. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and barrel tang. The barrel is fitted with a blade front sight and Buffington folding leaf rear sight adjustable for elevation and windage with an "R" (rifle) stamped on the sight leaf. Lock with three-click tumbler and a grooved trigger. The lock plate has the eagle and shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". "U.S./MODEL/1884" is stamped on the top of the breechblock. The Ordnance "V/P/Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left rear of the barrel with the letter "A" on to of the barrel at the breech. Mounted with a full one-piece walnut stock with a boxed "SWP/1889" Ordnance final inspection mark on the left wrist, a circled script "P" behind the lower tang and "U.S." stamped on the buttplate tang. Proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. There is a sling swivel on the forward barrel band and front of the trigger guard. Very fine. The rifle retains 90% slightly faded original blue finish. The front barrel band has a gray patina with some minor pitting. The breechblock retains 90% plus original bright case colors. The stock is fine with a couple of small minor gouges, some tool/vise marks on either side at the receiver, and overall some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
