Model 1858 Double-Action Army revolver manufactured by Starr Arms Co., circa 1860-63. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the barrel, frame, six-shot cylinder and trigger guard. The loading lever, and hammer have a color casehardened finish. The one-piece walnut grip is oil-finished. The round barrel has a dovetail mounted half-moon front sight. A groove in the hammer serves as the rear sight. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped "STARR'S PATENT JAN 15. 1856." and the left side of the frame is roll-stamped "STARR ARMS CO. NEW.YORK". The serial number "8330" is stamped on the front of the frame, the right side of the trigger and the side of the cylinder. All of the serial numbers match. Small "H" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on the barrel, cylinder, side plate and trigger guard. Ordnance final and sub-inspection marks consisting of three script initials with rectangular borders are stamped on both sides of the grip.
BBL: 6 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 8330
Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 75% plus bright original blue finish overall. The revolver shows minimal wear and may be un-issued. The finish loss is attributable to flaking, not usage. The metal surfaces on the barrel, frame and trigger guard where most of the flaking occurred are smooth and free from pitting or scratches. There are some minor scratches on the right side of the frame and some turn-marks on the cylinder. The percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder are both excellent and show no flash pitting. The hammer and loading lever retain 95% of the original casehardened finish with strong case colors. The one-piece walnut grip is in excellent plus condition with all of the original oil finish, no handling marks, and near perfect inspection cartouche stamps. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a very fine, possibly un-issued, example of an important Civil War Starr D.A. 1858 Army revolver.
