One of the most widely used handguns of the Civil War, the Remington New Model Army was the primary revolver issued to Union cavalry after the fire at the Colt's factory in 1863. The New Model Army was manufactured from 1863 to 1873 with a total production of approximately 132,000 and represented the last of Remington's 44 caliber percussion revolvers. The revolver has an 8 inch barrel and blue finish, casehardened hammer, fire blue trigger and brass trigger guard. The top barrel flat is marked: "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858/ E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION NEW YORK. U.S. A./ NEW-MODEL". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom barrel flat and on the left side of the frame under the grip. Small single letter inspection marks are stamped on most components. Fitted with smooth walnut grips with a clear boxed "OWA" cartouche on the lower left side.
BBL: 8 inch octagonal
Stock:
Gauge: 44 percussion
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 65115
Condition: Near excellent. The revolver retains 85% of the bright original high polish blue finish. The finish loss is due to flaking and concentrated on the top and left upper barrel flat leaving a smooth brownish patina. There are a few minor scratches on the right side of the frame and numerous minor scratches and dings on the butt. Overall there are some areas of speckled flaking. The trigger guard has a natural smooth dark aged patina. The grips are a bit undersized and remain fine with a moderate chip on the lower right edge and overall some scattered minor dings and dents. The cartouche is clear and legible. All markings are clear and the revolver is mechanically excellent. A very attractive Civil War Model 1858 New Model Army Revolver.
