USMC-SNIPER Marked Unertl 8 Power Scope with Micarta Case

This is one of the approximately 2,800 scopes manufactured for the U.S. Marine Corps. It is marked "J. Unertl/USMC-SNIPER/1406" on the main body tube. John Unertl developed and manufactured these scopes circa 1940 under contract for the U.S.M.C. They were intended to be used on Springfield Armory Model 1903 National Match rifles modified by U.S.M.C./Navy armorers. After WWII these scopes remained in U.S.M.C. inventory and were used successfully throughout Korea, and Vietnam. The reticle ring is stamped with an "8" to denote 8x magnification. This scope is accompanied with an original WWII issue micarta scope can, commercial black anodized scope mounts with recoil spring and screw on aluminum lens covers. The can has a green painted/impregnated type of finish with a canvas strap connected to the lid and canvas belt loop.

Very fine, 95% of the high quality blue finish remains with scattered minor dings, scratches, nicks and pin prick pitting visible in the finish. There is also some scattered minor surface oxidation. The optics are clear with the reticle intact. The scope case is very fine with some scratches and wear. A solid example of a U.S.M.C. Unertl sniper scope.
