USIS Indian Service Stamped Pistol & Beaded Sheath
The lot features a Sioux beaded Indian hide sheath with a circa 1885 Hopkins & Allen .32 caliber pistol which is stamped USIS. The collected noted “USIS” as standing for United States Indian Service, similar to other items marked as such. The pistol is a tilt barrel breach loading pocket pistol by Hopkins & Allen chambered in .32 caliber with a folding trigger. The grips bear two brass covered metal trade tacks and is stamped on the left side just above the grip USIS. The sheath exhibits an Indian brain tanned thick hide, possibly buffalo with trade beads in a cross motif. The sheath appears to be made for this pistol or its size. Said to be collected from the Minot Sioux in South Dakota and is from the ex-collection of Allen Glaser in Dallas, Texas. Holster measures 7 inches long by 4 inches wide. Marked Minot PD for Minot, North Dakota Police Department on the backstrap of the pistol.
