3’ x 4’ teal & blue, motto: “UNO PARA TUDOS Y TODOS PARA UNO”, “One for All & All for One”, circa 1970. With the construction of the Panama Canal, the U.S. military, since 1903, has long had a presence in Panama to protect this vital waterway. As such, it helped the Army focus on issues from the Caribbean to South America and the U.S. Army Caribbean Defense Command was created. Besides training U.S. troops for service in this region, they also reached out to the militaries of the many nations to build trust and offer training to their officers and troops. On June 11, 1963, the Kennedy Administration changed the name, and focus, of this command to the U.S. Army Southern Command. Now headquartered in Miami, Florida, the mission remains the same; defending the southern region of the United States and helping friendly nations deal with defense issues. All other U.S. military branches have involvement within this command. U.S. Army Training, Southern Command (SOUTHCOM). The ship is a reminder of Christopher Columbus’ discovery of the New World in 1492. The ship is the central device on the SOUTHCOM flag and it also adorns the shoulder patches for troops assigned to this command.
