U.S. William Muir Model 1861 Rifle Musket with Needham Patent Breech Loading Conversion

Manufactured in 1863, and later converted to a breechloader using the Needham system; the original breech was cut away with a side-swinging trapdoor and extended hammer striker installed. Blade front and 3-leaf rear sights, with the lock plate marked "1863" behind the hammer and "eagle/U.S." and "Wm MUIR &CO.(partially removed during conversion)/WINDSOR LOCKS, CT." ahead. Smooth straight wrist stock, with three "U" marked barrel bands, sling swivels, and a smooth "US" marked buttplate.

Very good as converted, with some mild dark spotting on the bright surfaces and a mixed brown patina on the hammer, lock and breech assembly. Stock is good as repaired, with mended cracks and filler visible on the buttstock, with scattered pressure dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
