This is an example of a Third Type Model 1816 flintlock musket from a contract for 21,560 muskets manufactured by Asa Waters of Millbury, Massachusetts between 1817 and 1836. This musket was finished bright with casehardened lock plate and removable brass flash pan. It has the Waters Third Type marking of "US / A. WATERS" in front of the hammer and "MILLBURY / 1832" vertically behind the hammer. Without a date on the tang. The barrel at the breech is marked "P" and "M" over "L.H. 1836". The left side plate is marked "V" and "J", and the front of the trigger guard plate is marked "C" and "J". Three iron barrel bands, iron button head ramrod, and sling swivels. The buttplate tang is marked "US" and "1".

Condition: Good. The barrel, left side plate and trigger guard have a mottled silver gray patina with extensive overall moderate pitting. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth darker brownish gray mottled patina. The stock is also good with a small pieced in repair ahead of the lock, a small sanded area on the right wrist a long minor crack on the left side of the buttstock and overall minor dents, dings and scratches. The markings are readable. The action is fine.
