This is an example of a Krag Model 1899 bolt action rifle which is equipped with the very rare experimental Parkhurst quick loading device. The device consisted of a clip slot attachment mounted on the right side of the receiver. The attachment supported a five shot clip above the magazine opening and would allow a strip of 5 cartridges to be loaded directly into the magazine. These were tested from 1901 to 1906 and it is reported that only 100 rifles and 100 carbines were equipped with the device. These rifles and carbines were found in the 288,000 to 290,000 serial number range (this example number 288344, falls well with in the range). A vast majority of these were from salvaged receivers that had been restored and then reassembled. Due to the development of a new magazine rifle, the anticipated end of manufacture of the Krag and the evaluation that no great increase in fire power resulted in a clip loading Krag, the device was not adopted for production. It is estimated that only about 2,000 of the Parkhurst clips were made at the Armory. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S. / MODEL 1899 SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" followed by the serial number. Blade front sight and tangent style rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards and marked with a "C" on the upper right hand side. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with forearm finger grooves and a small "A.L" stamped directly behind the trigger guard. The carbine doesn't come with any of the stripper clips.
BBL: 22 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30-40 Krag
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 288344
Condition: Refinished and crudely assembled and partially demilled. The barrel has a smooth gray patina. The trigger guard retains 95% original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with strong original blue finish in the protected areas of the left side plate. The left side of the receiver is cracked and most certainly was made inoperable by the U.S. Government. The field replacement stock wood is very fine with a few overall scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are clear. A very rare representative example of a 1899 Krag rifle with experimental Parkhurst Quick Loading Device.
