This rifle features pinned blade front sight, Model 1896 handguard and rear sight graduated to 1,800 yards. The left side of the receiver is marked "U.S. / MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY." followed by the serial number. The stock appears to be the rare fine grained light colored Italian Walnut used in limited quantities on these rifles. A boxed script, "JSA / 1901" inspection cartouche is stamped on the left stock wrist and a small "R.D.R." is stamped directly behind the trigger guard ahead of the circled "P" proofmark. The rifle is complete with a correct period tan canvas sling. The brass ends are stamped "PAT. MILLS & / ORNDORFF" on one side and dates on the opposite. The buttplate tang is marked "1168", most likely a rack number. The buttstock contains the three piece cleaning rod and oiler.
