U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag Gallery Practice Rifle with Replacement Stevens Pope Barrel
This is an example of one of the Model 1898 Krag .22 caliber Gallery Practice rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory. The rifle has the distinctive altered receiver side, .22 caliber Stevens - Pope barrel with off-set chamber and bolt with auxiliary extractor for the .22 Long cartridge. The receiver is marked with the standard "U.S. / MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, 476414" and "CAL../.22" added at the rear, which was added only to the Gallery Practice rifles. The top of the replacement barrel is marked "STEVENS - POPE / MANUFACTURED BY THE J. STEVENS ARMS & TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.". The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the boxed script "JLA / 189?" cartouche. The underside of the stock wrist is stamped with the circled "P" and a small "M". The rifle is fitted with a blade front and 1901 tangent rear sight graduated to 20 and marked 1, 2, 3, B and 4 on the left side of the base. The rifle is mounted with a full one piece straight grip stock and handguard, with bayonet lug and stacking swivel on the front band, flat steel buttplate with compartment (cleaning rod not included) and sling swivels.
BBL: 30 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 22 L
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 476414
Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains 40% faded original finish having had a protective coat of varnish or lacquer applied some time ago. Some of the coating has worn off exposing the original finish and the balance has a copper hue. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth gray and brown patina, darkest on the trigger guard which has streaks of original blue finish. The stock and handguard are fine with almost all of the original finish remaining and some overall scattered minor dents, dings and scratches. With exception of the fourth number in the date, the cartouche is clear. The remaining markings are clear and crisp. The action is excellent. A nice solid example of a Krag Model 1898 Gallery Practice rifle with replacement Stevens-Pope barrel.
