Estimate: $1200 - 1700
This later (1891) production Model 1888 rifle is the final variation of the Trapdoor Rifle and featured the ramrod bayonet, one piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and butt compartment. The barrel is fitted with the Buffington rear sight, with precise windage and elevation adjustments and a fixed front sight with hood. The rifle has a blue finish with casehardened breechblock and barrel tang. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock plate is marked with the standard eagle/shield motif and "US/SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The front of the low arch breechblock is marked, "U.S/MODEL/1884". The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and "A" inspection mark just ahead of the receiver. The left stock wrist is stamped with the boxed "SWP/1891" final inspection mark. A circled script "P" proofmark and small "M" are stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate tang is marked "U.S.". The final variation of the Springfield Trapdoor, the Model 1888 Rifle represented yet another attempt by the Ordnance Department to introduce the never-popular rod bayonet on the standard service rifle. The Model 1888 Rifle saw extensive service with state volunteer units during the Spanish-American War and subsequent Philippine Insurrection and was still in service with the militia and National Guard when the United States entered WWI.
