This later (1891) production Model 1888 rifle is the final variation of the Trapdoor Rifle and featured the ramrod bayonet, one piece trigger guard, serrated trigger and butt compartment. The barrel is fitted with the Buffington rear sight, with precise windage and elevation adjustments and a fixed blade front sight. The rifle has a blue finish with casehardened breechblock and barrel tang. The lock plate is marked with the standard eagle/shield motif and "US/SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The front of the low arch breechblock is marked "U.S/MODEL/1884". The left side of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proof and "I" on top. Mounted with a smooth oil finished black walnut stock with a boxed "SWP/1891" final inspection mark on the left wrist and a circled script "P" behind the lower tang. The buttplate tang is marked "U.S.". Complete with a leather sling. The Model 1888 Rifle saw extensive service with state volunteer units during the Spanish-American War and subsequent Philippine Insurrection and was still in service with the militia and National Guard when the United States entered WWI.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 60% original thin blue finish on the barrel mixed with smooth brown patina. The buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. The trigger guard retains 90% original blue finish. The breechblock retains 40% of the original darkened case colors with a mottled gray patina on the balance. The stock is also very fine with some scattered minor dents and sharp cartouche. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The sling is good with some age cracking and wear.
