This is an excellent example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1887. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight marked "R" on the front. The rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/ P / eagle head / P" proof and inspector marks. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands both marked with a "U", button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. "SWP / 1887" cartouche on the left wrist and circled script "P" on the underside behind the trigger guard. There is sling swivel mounted on the front of the trigger guard and front barrel band.
BBL: 32-5/8 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 45-70
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 370425
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 90% plus of the original blue finish. There is some loss of finish on the muzzle end of the barrel due to a bayonet and some mild high edge wear. The breechblock retains 95% of the vivid case colors, while the upper tang has faded to a smooth brown. The wood is very fine with some scattered minor pressure dents and dings and a few minor chips ahead of the lock. The cartouche is crisp, (the "87" is a bit heavier stamped), possibly double stamped at the factory. All of the markings are crisp. There is a protective coat of varnish on the wood.
