U.S. Springfield Model 1884  Trapdoor  Rifle with Bayonet
This is a late production U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has a blued barrel, bands, lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate. The breech block and barrel tang have a color casehardened finish. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish. The rifle has the Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation, 'low arch' breechblock, three-click tumbler and grooved trigger. The lock plate is stamped with the Eagle and shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The top of the breechblock is marked: "U.S./MODEL/1884" in three lines. The left side of the barrel is stamped with the Ordnance "V/P/ Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks just ahead of the receiver. The leaf of the Buffington rear sight is stamped with an "R" (rifle). "G/U.S." is stamped on the heel of the buttplate. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of the script initials "SWP" over the date "1889" in a rectangle with flattened corners. An encircled, script, "P" proofmark is stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. The socket bayonet has a 18-inch angular blade that is stamped "U. S." in front of the shank. The bayonet is complete with a regulation scabbard with blued body, black leather hanger and cast brass hook.

Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 90% of the original blue and 70% faded casehardened finish. The finish on the receiver and lock plate is thinning and the barrel has scattered handling marks. The stock is in very fine condition with clear proof and inspection marks. The bayonet retains 90% of the original blue finish. The scabbard is in fine condition and retains about 50% of the blue finish. The leather hanger is dirty but remains in good condition. The hook has a deep age patina.
