U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle

The rear sight is graduated to 1,200 yards with a base graduated 1-5. The rear sight leaf and base are marked with the letter "R" (rifle). The left rear of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head/P" proofs and the top of the barrel at the breech is stamped with the letter "R". The breech block is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" and the lock plate is marked with the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD". Three-click tumbler and serrated trigger. The later production replacement stock wrist has a script "SWP/1890" boxed cartouche and a circled "P" is stamped behind the trigger guard. The buttplate has "US" on the tang.

Fine as assembled. The rifle retains 40% original blue finish with the balance a smooth gray patina. The breech block has faded to a silver gray. The arsenal replacement stock is excellent with some scattered minor pressure dents showing an excellent cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
