Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trap Door" this rifle is a post Civil War alteration of Springfield Model 1863 Rifle-Musket for the .50 caliber center fire cartridge. The rifle is finished "National Armory Bright" and has an oil finished black walnut stock. The lock plate is dated "1864" behind the hammer and is marked with the eagle and shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" in front of it. The top of the breechblock is dated "1866" and stamped with an Eagle Head. There are no visible cartouches on the stock. The heel of the buttplate is marked "US". Sling swivel mounted on the middle band and on the front of the trigger guard and the correct ramrod with the knurled and slotted head.

Condition: Very good. The barrel retains 50% of the dull original bright finish with some scattered minor pitting and areas of discoloration. The barrel bands have a gray patina with minor pitting. The hammer has a smooth dark patina and the remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock is very good with a few minor chips ahead of the front left flat screw and overall scattered minor dings, dents and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The markings remain clear. The action is excellent.
