U.S. Springfield Model 1865 Allin Conversion Rifle-Musket

Produced originally as an 1863 rifle-musket, and converted by Springfield Armory in 1865 into a breech loading rifle. Invented by Easkine S. Allin, master armorer. The "Trapdoor" is equipped with a shell ejector. The barrel was also shortened, after the time of the conversion by various surplus firms in the lat 19th century. The lock is dated "1864" behind the hammer and marked with the Eagle Shield and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. Fixed blade front and 2-leaf folding rear sights. Mounted with a smooth straight grip stock with 3 barrel bands, sling swivels, two clear inspectors cartouches on the left flat, a small "WB" behind the lower tang and "US" marked buttplate tang.

Condition: Very fine as period shortened. The barrel retains a bright appearance with areas of discoloration. The breechblock has 60% original blue with the balance a dark patina. The remaining metal has a smooth mottled gray patina. The stock remains very fine with crisp cartouche, and a few minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
