U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Percussion Pistol Carbine

Model 1855 Percussion Pistol Carbine manufactured by the Springfield Armory in 1856. This unique weapon has a Maynard tape-lock primer on the lock, bolster with clean-out screw, two-leaf rear sight graduated to 400 yards and swivel ramrod with concave button tip. The back strap is slotted for the attachable shoulder stock utilized to convert the pistol to a carbine. The forearm cap, barrel band and trigger guard are brass. The barrel, lock hammer and back strap are National Armory Bright. The stock is oil-finished black walnut. The lock plate is dated "1856" behind the hammer and roll-stamped "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines ahead of the bolster. The Springfield Eagle and Shield motif is roll-stamped on the primer magazine door. The left barrel flat is stamped "V/P/Eagle head" proof and inspection marks. The pistol buttcap is stamped with the batch number "9".

Condition: Fair. The Pistol Carbine is all original and only lacks the attachable buttstock. It shows the service wear typical of virtually all Model 1855 Pistol carbines. The rebored barrel, lock and back strap have been lightly cleaned and show age discoloration and light pitting. The lock, primer door, and barrel markings are faint. The date on the top of the barrel is not visible. The action is tight and functional and the Maynard tape primer is complete and functions well. The brass furniture is an even mellow patina. The stock shows handling wear with numerous handling marks. There is a 1/4-inch dent in the left stock.
