U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Calvary Musketoon

The Model 1847 Calvary Musketoon was almost identical to the Artillery Musketoon which was intended to be issued to cavalry units prior to the Civil War. There were approximately 6,000 Calvary Musketoons manufactured and the distinguishing features were that the furniture was all made of polished brass, button head ramrod fastened with iron swivel under the barrel muzzle, no bayonet lug, lacks any sling swivels and a 9 1/4 inch sling bar attached to the left side of the stock. The stock was narrower and extended beyond the front barrel band. This Musketoon matches that description with a .69 caliber smoothbore barrel and a three leaf rear sight. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1851" vertically behind the hammer and has an Eagle and Shield motif over "U.S." ahead of the hammer. Left side of the barrel is stamped with "Eagle Head/P/V" proof and 1851 date on top of the tang.

About good. The barrel has been cleaned and features minor pitting overall and some minor spotting near the muzzle. The rest of the iron components have been cleaned and are now beginning to age again with a darker gray patina on the hammer. The brass barrel bands have also been cleaned. The buttplate and trigger guard have a smooth aged brass patina. The otherwise good period reoiled stock has numerous minor scratches and some minor dings. There are a few minor gouges mostly on the buttstock. Mechanically fine.
