U.S. Springfield Armory Spencer Carbine Infantry Rifle Conversion
Performed at Springfield Armory circa 1871, this conversion used the Burnside marked Model 1865 carbine receiver fitted with a new 32 1/2" round 50 caliber barrel with three groove rifle, stabler cut-off, full forend fastened by two barrel bands and an iron ramrod with ribbed head. Around 1,108 were converted. The receiver is marked "MODEL / 1865" followed by "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE / PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860/ MANUF'D AT PROV., R.I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO." Fixed blade and three leaf sights, saddle ring bar with ring mounted on left side of stock, "ESA" inspector cartouche on stock. The left side of the barrel has the serial number, with "B.173" on the right side.

Condition: Very good. The barrel has a mottled brown-gray patina and the receiver retains 40% original silvered out case colors with the balance a mottled gray patina. Overall there is some scattered minor pitting. The wood is also very good with some minor dings and scratches, and a faint cartouche.
