This is a very nice example of a scarce early WWII USMC Model 1941 type sniper rifle as used by the USMC. These were some of the first, true purpose built sniper rifles used only by the USMC. This rifle is based on an early 1903A1 NM rifle that has been fitted with an original 8X, USMC contract, Unertl sniper scope that is complete with the original green micarta carrying case. The scope is marked on the rear of the scope: "J. Unertl/USMC-SNIPER/2233" and is complete with the screw on lens covers. The rifle has been fitted with two early Unertl type, color casehardened bases; one on the receiver and the other on the barrel, with the handguard correctly modified to allow the scope to be mounted. The NM barrel is marked behind the front sight: "SA/Flaming Bomb/3-37" and is correctly stamped with the small star-gauge mark on the muzzle at the 6 o'clock position. The rifle has been fitted with the correct pre-war bright polished Nickel Steel bolt marked "N.S." on top of the bolt handle, which has been numbered (1506441), which matches the rifle. The rifle has an original pre-war walnut "C" stock with two reinforcing bolts, a single circled "P" proof in the pistol grip area along with the matching serial number and drawing number stamped on the rear underside of the stock. The stock has the correct checkered steel buttplate with trapdoor containing a plastic oiler with a pull through patch holder. It has the standard fixed front sight with a late style ladder rear rear sight graduated from 200-2,800 yards without the 2,850 yard notch.
